Public system
Government hospitals and clinics. Very low cost, but queues are long and English is rare. Best for routine care once you know the system; not where you want your first emergency.
Private system
Private hospitals and clinics where most expats get care. English-speaking staff are common, costs are moderate by international standards, and private insurance covers most visits.
Day one — urgent care
What to do in an emergency
- Call 123 (ambulance) or 112 (unified) — say your area and "hospital". English operators are not guaranteed; know a building name or landmark.

- For anything you can reach by taxi, go straight to a private hospital emergency room — same-day, usually English-speaking, no referral needed.
